Vesta Spins to the Dawn Chorus (views from outer space)

There is a special folder I use to save bits of historical footage you probably never saw. Every once in a rare while, I make a random movie out of this black detritus and today you get to take a spin on Vesta to the Dawn Chorus..

Music is “Dawn Chorus” by Boards of Canada

This movie contains footage from four different films:

1.) a flight over Vesta by the Dawn Mission probe in the asteroid belt
2.) weather balloon explodes in slow motion at high earth altitude
3.) the Sun spits plasma from a series of sunspots
4.) the International Space Station flies over Earth during a solar storm

My favourite part is the view of Earth’s green energy shield at 2:22

Driving a Honda Civic on a Dirt Road to Kokanee Glacier in the Kootenays

This movie is time lapse driving footage crammed into a side-by-side view:

On the left is some dirt road driving and on the right is some freshly paved highway driving. The same Honda Civic car was used in both films, although it cost me some repairs this time. Mode’s Brake and Muffler did a great job of welding my muffler back together — check him out under the orange bridge in Nelson BC.

So what does the actual Kokanee Glacier look like? Ah.. some things we must experience for ourselves. =)

Technical Notes:

The video was filmed using a vacuum suction mount on the inside windshield of the vehicle. A Sony HDR XR200 camcorder with a wide angle lens was used to provide an impressive moving panoramic scene. iMovie 11 was used to create the side-by-side video effect with a sliding panel fade effect.

Technical Notes:

Shooting HD video in the dim lighting conditions of an indoor theatre can be challenging; fortunately the Panasonic AG-HMC150P HD video camera performs quite well at these kinds of venues as evidenced in this collection of HD video clips. We filmed these video sequences at 24 frames per second and discovered that iMovie ’11 is now capable of handling this frame rate — previously iMovie ’09 rejected 24 fps clips. The still photos in this video were shot using the Nikon D5000 under sunny conditions and shined up using Aperture 3.
