It’s been awhile since we made a driving video..

Technical Notes:

This footage was shot entirely with the Sony HDR-XR200. A vacuum suction mount was used to secure the camera for the driving parts. All the water and nature clips were shot free-hand (deep in the woods).

I’ve been wanting to create this project for awhile (since June) and I was waiting for the right music track to score the video. Needless to say, “Give me Love” was the final inspiration.

This music video was edited using Final Cut Express v4.01 and I made liberal use of FxFactory Pro 2.5 to render the special effects. I used markers for the first time to tag certain points in the music track first, then keyed the video effect filters from these marker points.

At certain points in the movie there are some “green screen” effects that were generated using the bright blue sky as a blue chroma key.

Using Final Cut Express v4.01 takes a lot longer to assemble a project than iMovie ’11, but as you can see, the end result is definitely worth it.

Golden Alchemy Crystal Bowl

It was my honour and privilege to to play this golden alchemy crystal bowl.

Technical Notes:

This video was recorded using a Panasonic AG-HMC150P camera with a professional R0de shotgun mic. Video editing was done with Final Cut Express v4.01 and some filters from FxFactory Pro v2.5

We filmed this video against a grey screen (my first time using this colour) and the result was disastrous! It turns out grey screens have a lot of blue and green in them, and my choice of a blue shirt, grey trim, and a grey frosting on the crystal bowl made it impossible to get the chroma key to work over the whole video image. Oh well, I’ll remember to wear brown or red next time!

Two copies of the crystal bowl clip were chroma keyed onto some forest brook footage. Color Correction, Sharpen Chroma (FxPlug), Chroma Keyer, and Synthesizer (FxPlug) video filters were then applied to achieve the super bright colors and animation effects.

Technical Notes:

The background behind Kent Hehr in the original video is red with shades of black in the curtain weave. I really wanted to create a “green screen” effect putting the city of Calgary behind Kent Hehr, but doing a chroma key on the red background also had an affect on the skin tones in Kent’s face and hands. I tried many ways to minimize this using edge detection mattes, but lacking a good rotoscaping tool this was the best I could do. In the end I decided it looked sort of interesting, and thought I’d share this video as an example of extreme green screening using Final Cut Express.
